Altair
A showcase of 12 NYC experimental filmmakers; seven directed by Staten Islanders. Curated by special effects artist and filmmaker Altair, this group of films and videos will surprise, delight, and amaze. Our promise is that nothing conventional will be presented on this night.
Highlights include a Troma filmmaker's story of vengeance, paper stop motion animation, a man screaming at a real dismembered deer carcass, a chainsaw killing shot in Stapleton, a psychedelic mold infused 8mm reel, dino nugget stop motion, an anti-terrorist training comedy, and rats chewing on spam.

Altair is an NYC filmmaker, sculptor and special fx artist, and the curator for DAY ONE of this festival. His two story mechanical sculpture called 'Psychokinetic Child' was an icon of the 2013 Burning Man Art Festival. Official Sites : www.kineticchild.com and www.crashingart.com

7pm MOVIE: SHE'S BEAUTIFUL WHEN SHE'S ANGRY
SHE’S BEAUTIFUL WHEN SHE’S ANGRY resurrects the buried history of the outrageous, often brilliant women who founded the modern women’s movement from 1966 to 1971.
SHE’S BEAUTIFUL does not try to romanticize the early movement, but dramatizes it in its exhilarating, quarrelsome, sometimes heart-wrenching glory. The film does not shy away from the controversies over race, sexual preference and leadership that arose in the women’s movement. SHE’S BEAUTIFUL WHEN SHE’S ANGRY captures the spirit of the time --- thrilling, scandalous, and often hilarious.
That story still resonates today for women who are facing new challenges around reproductive rights and sexual violence, as the film shows present-day activists creating their generation's own version of feminism. SHE’S BEAUTIFUL WHEN SHE’S ANGRY is a film about activists, made to inspire women and men to work for feminism and human rights.

What we may perceive and believe about the world we share is very likely not precisely the same as what another species would perceive and believe about the very same place, in fact you could say we live in different, closely parallel worlds.

7:30 FILM: "TWO-WHEELED ACTIVISM"– a film about bicycle activists in New York City (pre-premiere screening)
In this one-woman production, we crash directly into the heart of the bicycle activist community of NYC. We follow the Public Space Party in their fight to get illegally parked cars out of the bike lanes of downtown Brooklyn. We join Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets in remembering the victims of traffic crashes. We take our bikes aboard the Staten Island ferry for a Peace Bike Ride. We get an exclusive insight into the strategies of Bill Di Paola, director of the environmental organization Time’s UP!, and we learn what it means to “ride like a hippo” from the fierce members of the women empowerment bicycle group WE Bike.

During the fall of 2015, visual anthropology student Emma Louise Pedersen, biked the streets of New York City’s five boroughs. Bringing along a camera as her primary research tool, Emma documented her meeting with the passionate bicycle activists, joining the community for both the fun and the frustrations of biking in NYC.
     Duration: 45 minutes
The film screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the filmmaker.

  Sally K. Lehman
is a micro-publisher whose novel "IN THE FAT" is an edgy YA novel that explores rough issues of family dysfunction and cutting.

Praise for "In the Fat"..."FINALLY a book for young adults that does not sentimentalize the life or body. This book tells it gut-straight and heart-sure: youth leads with the body and she won't do what you told her any more. It won't surprise me if readers carry this book around with them, in purses and hands and under pillows, frayed and torn, read so hard it's part of them."   - Lidia Yuknavitch, author of The Small Backs of Children

Jessica Ann Standifird is a poet, writer, musician and performer from Portland, Oregon. She has been writing both poetry and fiction since she was a child, and is currently working on a memoir. She has two poetry chapbooks – Getting Dressed In The Dark and Getting Dressed In The Dark Two – and one chapbook of short fiction and memoir – Like Feathers. She is also a musician and plays the banjolele, ukelele, and sings backup vocals for the Portland based dark cabaret band Bright And Shiny. Jessica is a co-founder of the publishing company Blue Skirt Productions and the artists' collective Cats In A Dumpster. S.I. OutLOUD! presents Paul Zindel's RATS
Zindel, a Pulitzer Prize winner, lived on SI and taught at Tottenville High School.
FIRST SENTENCE:
"His first day back from the Fourth of July vacation, Leroy Sabiesiak knew he'd get some good target practice with the rats in Area 17."

Rats: A good example of a horror novel for older students!
Paul Zindel's novel "Rats" is a gruesome, horrific, grisly story about killer rats. They are larger than normal sized rats, because of a chemical reaction at a landfill containing a buildup of methane gas underground. It is up to 15- year ol sarah Macafee and her 10- year old brother Michael to stop them. Zindel who is more widely known for his book "The Pigman", takes this novel to new heights and dimensions. The story is a nightmarish thriller that depicts gigantic rodents graphically devouring people. This book leaves nothing to the imagination! There is endless carnage page after page of gruesome details, numerous descriptions of bodily dismemberment, and jolts of horror. Zindel's style is fast paced and takes the reader on a roller coaster ride of horror. There is never a dull moment in this book. The plot is full of spine tingling, stomach-churning action. This book is a great motivator to get older students to read, adolescent readers will not be able to put this book down. This book is appropriate for children who are 11-14 years of age. This book IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR YOUNG CHILDREN AT ALL!! Teachers or parents may dislike this book, but students/teenagers (especially boys) will love it.

2:30 STANDING ROCK WITNESS REPORT - HEATHER SIOUX brings stories, images and video from her ongoing connection to the historical events at Standing Rock, ND, where the WATER PROTECTORS are refusing to allow the poisoning of the great missouri river by a new oil pipeline. She is also collecting donations to bring to the camp if you want to help support.

What are the facts? A private oil-pipeline-company with hundreds of oil spills and broken pipelines to its credit, wants to put a new private oil pipeline through the Missouri River and many other waterways. Many thousands of citizens and veterans have put their lives on the line to stop it, and continue to do so today. Militarized police have been brutally enforcing the private oil company's wishes. Occasionally false reports that the pipeline has been stopped are shared through the media, reducing the water protector population and making it easier for the pipeline to further towards completion.

Come experience a first-hand report and discussion.
